I think that the heart of Knoxville got just a little bit bigger this past weekend. The community and love that was shared was inspiring to capture and I'm so thankful that I was able to document this day for so many reasons. I'm going to be a little wordy with this so bear with me.
A little over 2 months ago, Yoga teacher Betty Kalister was killed in a plane crash along with her husband and daughter. It was her dream to see Knoxville host an outdoor yoga event like so many other cities do and a few years ago she did just that. So in honor of her memory three amazing women and fellow yoga teachers decided to host one in her honor - Jill, Catherine, & Jen. This year it doubled in size so I'm going to estimate there were 350+ people there. Amazing! I hope this grows year after year after year.
I didn't know Betty well, but as a member of Real Hot Yoga in Knoxville I had the privilege of taking a few of her classes. And I definitely got to see the heart that she left in the hands of those who remain here. The week that she died was a very emotional one. I remember going to a class with Micole and she set an intention for the class, as she often does. Love. Simply Love. Thru a few tears she challenged us to lead every movement with love because we are never guaranteed tomorrow and, God forbid, our last action or our last word should be anything but love. I think I have carried that with me or thought about that every single day since. It's not a new concept and it's certainly not something I've never heard before but something about the way that message got carried into my heart - it never left. Couldn't we just all use this reminder every single day? It's something I'll day after day continue to strive for - even when I'm frustrated or angry.
Real Hot Yoga is a place I absolutely adore. One of my favorite classes, taught by Emily, ends with this - take a moment to thank yourself for giving back to you so that you can give back to others. SO THAT YOU CAN GIVE BACK TO OTHERS. Isn't that just beautiful? This has been the reason that I continue to go back week after week. So I can give my very best to my family and friends and to my clients. This year, I've been really consistent with going to yoga 4 times a week and I can feel it in my energy level all the time. On Saturday it felt like the hearts of every yogi were this open. They held hands and swayed together. They opened their faces to the sun. And they laughed with strangers. So that they can give back to others.
Even not knowing Betty, I felt that she would have been so proud of this event. It was the Knoxville Community at it's finest and I'm so excited to share these images from such a great event...
